# Setup

This page covers everything you set up once and then forget about: updating your SUNSCAN, getting it onto your network, connecting your SpectroSolHub account, and the app's own preferences. Once these are done, you only come back here when something changes.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Most of the new features in this version require firmware 2.1. Update your SUNSCAN first, or they will not be available.
{% endhint %}

## Update your SUNSCAN

The app offers the update as soon as it detects a SUNSCAN that needs one. A dialog shows the installed version and the new one, and starts the update straight away: you do not have to go through the Settings.

The update is optional, and "Later" dismisses the dialog, but the app will very likely be unstable without it. The dialog only appears once per session, and the update stays available in the Settings.

The app waits for the SUNSCAN to reboot and checks the installed version before telling you the update succeeded.

## Connect your SUNSCAN to your home Wi-Fi

Your SUNSCAN can join your own Wi-Fi network instead of running its hotspot.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the Settings

Everything happens from the app: no keyboard or screen plugged into the SUNSCAN.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Pick your network

Choose a network from the list, or enter the details of a hidden network yourself.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Let the app switch over

It guides you while the SUNSCAN moves to the new network, then finds it there automatically.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

**If it fails**: the SUNSCAN falls back to its hotspot on its own, and the app tells you why: wrong password, network not found, and so on.

**Saved networks**: the SUNSCAN rejoins them automatically at startup. You can forget them from the Settings, or switch back to the hotspot.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Why put your SUNSCAN on your Wi-Fi?** It is required for uploading to SpectroSolHub: the SUNSCAN sends the images, not your phone, so it needs internet access of its own. It also means your phone stays online for the whole observing session.
{% endhint %}

## Find your SUNSCAN on the network

Once the SUNSCAN is on your network, the "Find SUNSCAN" button locates it automatically. You can also type its IP address by hand.

From a computer or phone on the same network, `http://sunscan.local` opens the SUNSCAN web interface in a browser.

## Hotspot mode

The hotspot is still the default the first time you switch the SUNSCAN on, and the fallback whenever a home Wi-Fi connection fails. The SUNSCAN then brings up its own network:

* **Network**: `sunscan-******`
* **Password**: `SunScanByStaros`

On the hotspot, the SUNSCAN has **no** internet access. Uploading to SpectroSolHub is therefore impossible while you stay in this mode, and the app says so.

**Fix**: some phones, Xiaomi models in particular, could not connect to the hotspot. This is fixed in 2.1.

## SpectroSolHub account

[SpectroSolHub](https://spectrosolhub.com) is the sharing platform of the spectroheliograph community. You enter your credentials once, from the SpectroSolHub section of the Settings. Two-factor authentication is supported.

Your password is never stored: the SUNSCAN exchanges it for an access token, which you can revoke from your account on the website. The Settings also show the storage space and the number of images used on your account.

Uploading scans and stacks is covered on the [Share your images](/use/share/integrations.md) page.

## Settings

The Settings screen is reorganised into cards, each grouping related options together.

* **Languages**: they are now picked with buttons: French, English, Spanish.
* **Storage space**: the app warns you when free space drops below 5 GB.
